    Shirley Metzger, LCSW

In 1998 I became a caregiver for my elderly parents, and as they navigated their long and complicated aging path, I realized that I could be a valuable resource for others as well.  I returned to college during that time and completed my social work education at George Mason and Virginia Commonwealth Universities, earning my LCSW Certification in 2006.  Over the past years, I have worked in two large independent living communities with hundreds of older adults.  In 2016 my daughter and I launched our private practice “Northern Virginia Older Adult Counseling.”  I believe strongly that psycho-therapy counseling can make a positive difference in quality of life for individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, medical problems and family unrest – the challenges and ravages of aging.  I offer a strength-based, psychodynamic approach that utilizes the power of the relationship between the client and the therapist.  My goal is always to respect the unique journey that my client has invited me to join.
